Book Review Grandparents Bags of Stories by Sudha MurtyBook Review

Sudha Murty’s Grandparents’ Bag of Stories revolves around Ajja (grandfather) and Ajji (grandmother), who welcome their grandchildren to their home in Shiggaon, a picturesque village, during the coronavirus lockdown. During this time, the grandparents captivate the children with fascinating stories that convey valuable lessons on virtues such as honesty, kindness, courage, and respect for nature. These tales, drawn from folktales, fables, and Indian traditions, beautifully blend entertainment with moral wisdom.

The book is a delightful collection that captures the essence of storytelling, a cherished tradition in Indian households. Sudha Murty skillfully weaves simple yet profound narratives, making it an engaging read for children and a nostalgic journey for adults. Its warm, conversational tone creates the feeling of sitting in a grandparent’s courtyard, listening to timeless tales.

Perfect for family storytelling sessions or introducing children to the joy of reading, this heartwarming book celebrates family bonds, Indian culture, and the magic of stories. Among my personal favorites are “A World of Wheat,” which explains the origin of wheat on Earth, and “The Magic Bean,” a delightful Indian twist on the classic tale “Jack and the Beanstalk.”
