Book Review: Lets talk Money by Monika Halan

Book Review Lets Talk Money by Monika Halan

Let’s Talk Money by Monica Halan is a practical and beginner-friendly guide to financial planning, especially for those who consider themselves “money dummies.” Aimed at readers of all ages—from their 30s to 50s—the book offers a step-by-step roadmap to help individuals take control of their finances and reduce daily money-related stress.

Unlike many complex finance books, Halan excels at breaking down financial concepts into simple, relatable language. She emphasizes the importance of creating a financial plan and makes the process approachable by focusing on goal setting, budgeting, and disciplined saving.

Drawing from her personal journey—she began investing at the age of 50—Halan keeps the narrative engaging and authentic. She covers all key areas of investment, including mutual funds, stocks, real estate, and fixed deposits, guiding readers on how to build financial security using the right mix of financial products.

The book also discusses how to align investment choices with one’s risk tolerance and long-term financial goals. It stresses the importance of insurance—life, health, and disability—as a crucial part of financial planning and offers advice on selecting suitable policies.

Debt management is another focus, with practical strategies to avoid falling into debt traps. Halan also underscores the importance of early retirement planning, detailing various savings options available in India to build a secure retirement corpus.

A dedicated chapter on tax planning provides tips to legally reduce tax liabilities. In a post-pandemic world, where financial uncertainty still looms, Let’s Talk Money serves as an accessible and empowering guide to managing money wisely.

What I don’t like about book?

  • There are loads of details which at one time is difficult to remember so I suggest keep a pen and notebook handy for understanding investments in better way.

  • The book is designed with Indian readers in mind, which may restrict its applicability for an international audience.
